Here at D&B Militaria we have an extensive collection of WW1 & WW2 Gas Masks & Respirators, including British & German. This entry is part 6 of a 10-part series on World War I. None of the British soldiers at Ypres had gas masks, resulting in 7,000 injuries and more than 1,100 deaths from chlorine gas asphyxiation. One of the most notable gas masks used during WW1 was the British Small Box Respirator or SBR designed in 1916 and the German GM-15 mask. I've gathered photographs of the Great War from dozens of collections, some digitized for the first time, to try to tell the story of the conflict, those caught up in it, and how much it affected the world. This is part of why they were required to shave every day (except for their mustache). This entry is a glimpse into the lives of these people, in battle, at play, at rest, and at work, during the war. Later in the war, soldiers carried a gas mask. From the millions of refugees forced from their homes, to the volunteer ambulance drivers, cooks, and nurses, to the civilian support groups used by all major armies, ordinary people found themselves at war. While soldiers bore the brunt of the war, civilians were involved on a massive scale as well. The presence of protective clothing and/or a gas mask reduces.
